What is Rimmed steel plate?

It is a steel plate hot-rolled from ordinary carbon structural steel rimmed steel. Rimmed steel is an incompletely deoxidized steel. Only a certain amount of weak deoxidizer is used to deoxidize the molten steel. The oxygen content of the molten steel is relatively high. When the molten steel is injected into the ingot mold, the carbon-oxygen reaction produces a large amount of gas, causing the molten steel to boil, hence the name of rimmed steel. Rimmed steel has a low carbon content. Since ferrosilicon is not used for deoxidation, the silicon content in the steel is also low (Si<0.07%). The outer layer of rimmed steel is crystallized under the conditions of violent agitation of the molten steel caused by boiling, so the surface layer is pure and dense, with good surface quality, good plasticity and stamping performance, no large concentrated shrinkage cavities, less cutting heads, high yield rate, and simple production process of rimmed steel, less consumption of ferroalloys, and low steel cost. Rimmed steel plates are widely used in the manufacture of various stamping parts, building and engineering structures, and some less important machine structure parts. However, there are more impurities in the core of rimmed steel, more serious segregation, less dense organization, and uneven mechanical properties. At the same time, due to the high gas content in the steel, the toughness is low, the cold brittleness and aging sensitivity are large, and the welding performance is also poor. Therefore, the boiling steel plate is not suitable for manufacturing welding structures and other important structures that bear impact loads and work under low temperature conditions.
